An Unhinged Recap Video loosely refers to a type of fandom related video in which someone recaps the plot, storylines, or relationship dynamics of a particular fandom text; often a show, though any medium could apply.
These specific recap vids usually involve standing in front of a whiteboard or wall peppered with images of characters, sometimes with an additional prop, such as a stick to point out characters with, and each video tends to be a few hours in length. The texts in question tend to be shows with multiple series of varying quality with often iconically bizarre content.
History
The video that seems to have popularised this form of recap video is Jenny Nicholson's THE Vampire Diaries Video which as of February 17th 2023, has over 10 million views, being watched by both fans and non-fans of The Vampire Diaries alike. From there, YouTuber Mike's Mic credited Jenny's video as inspiration for his Pretty Little Liars recap video, and has since created similiar videos for Glee and Gossip Girl. cari can read did another series of videos recapping the plot of several books by Sarah J. Maas, including A Court of Thorns and Roses and Crescent City.
Several YouTubers have credited their videos to Mike's Mic.[1] Many of the videos have since dropped the 'Unhinged' from the title, whilst still following the same basic format.
