Unconventional pairing, unconventional couple or unconventional ship is a fannish term that has different meanings in different fandoms. In Buffy and Roswell fandom in the early 2000s, it referred to any non-canon pairing: see UCSL. In Animorphs fandom, and possibly others, it appears to be a synonym of rarepair. However, since non-canonical pairings are on average more likely to be rarepairs, it is not always obvious how the term is being used. The term is sometimes used to indicate a pairing that isn't just rare, but that would likely never happen in canon, like enemies becoming lovers.[1]
