Uncharted is an action-adventure first person shooter game series developed by Naughty Dog as a Playstation exclusive title. The series follows protagonist Nathan Drake, a charismatic yet rebellious treasure hunter who journeys across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. In most of the games, Nathan is joined by the wise, snarky mentor figure of Victor 'Sully' Sullivan, and determined 'Action Girl' Elena Fisher.

Games

The Uncharted franchise consists of the following titles:

  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Comics

In 2011, DC comics made a six issue series in the Uncharted universe that has more character development with some of the major characters and some reoccuring characters (Harry Flynn and Chloe Frasier). The comics, written by Joshua Williamson, can be found to read online here.[1]

Fandom

In the early days of Uncharted release it was compared to Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider; some fans and detractors alike tended to refer to it as Dude Raider. In 2013, missyvortexdv noted that:

The fandom for Uncharted is relatively small. You'll find more graphic sets/picspam and fan artwork than fanfic in the fandom too, much of it occurring on tumblr rather than LiveJournal.

There's still a reasonable number of fanfics, for a game fandom, and a not too bad ratio of gen adventure fics that mimic the games' plot structure though all too often those are works in progress never to be finished.[1]

Shipping

The fandom has a relatively equal mix of het, slash and gen works, while femslash appear less often.

Nathan Drake/Elena Fisher is one of the main ships thanks to their canon relationship throughout the series. Nathan Drake/Chloe Frazer is less common, however their shared history does appear in fanworks occasionally.

Nathan Drake/Harry Flynn was one of the more popular slash ships before the introduction of Samuel Drake in A Thief's End, which lead to Nathan Drake/Samuel Drake becoming very popular. This is often a source of discourse within the fandom due to it being an incest ship. Rafe Adler/Samuel Drake is another well liked pairing to come out of A Thief's End.

While femslash remains rare, the release of The Lost Legacy, which focused on a team up between Chloe and Nadine, has brought more fan interest in Chloe Frazer/Nadine Ross, leading to a slow increase in the amount of femslash within the fandom overall. Before this the only other significant ship was Elena Fisher/Chloe Frazer, however it was very much a rare pair.

Around the time that Uncharted 4 came out, there were a number of ships including Rafe Adler - those ships namely being NateRafe, Rafe Adler/Samuel Drake and - though it has decreased in popularity, partially due to the canonization of ChloeNadine - RafeNadine. Given the decrease in the fandom since the last game's release, these ships are smaller but have dedicated pockets of the fandom.

Movie

There is considerable fandom debate about the upcoming Uncharted movie (the one with Holland and Wahlberg), namely dislike from some fans about casting Wahlberg as Sullivan and the storyline being a mess to figure out - at first it was rumoured to be a prequel movie with Holland playing a much younger Drake, and Sully being middle-aged, but this got changed when rumours came out that Chloe and Elena would be appearing (the former first appearing in a comic and then the second game, and the latter's first appearance being in the first game). Trailers since those leaks seem to imply that the movie will be a combination of all four games.

Other fans however feel that the movie will bring resurgence to a fandom that's been silent since Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy came out in 2017.
