UFO is a slash and gen anthology out of Australia.

Issue 1

another cover for issue #1

UFO 1 is subtitled, "Identified." It was published in 1993 and contains 200 pages.

The art is by Paul Richardson, Bernice, and Wayne 'Al' Davidson.

The first 100 pages are gen, the second 100 pages are adult het and slash. Fans could also buy each section separately.

The zine required an age statement to purchase "due to the adult content of the slash section."

From a 1991 flyer:

Finally, after two years in preparation, a brand new zine, dedicated to the 1968 show, UFO, is on the market. Divided into two sections, and available as a whole zine, or as a General zine or a Slash zine. This zine is spiral bound, blue and white card covers, photo printed (light weight mock velum), 204 pages, 300,000 words! That's more than three times as many as most zines today!...

Note: two stories of the 23 stories in the zine have been reprinted elsewhere, but I though they were worth seeing again, as they had very limited publication.

The gen section:

  • An Unknown War by Cathy Lynn Goodwin (1)
  • Winterkill by Pat Jenkins (3)
  • Clear as Snow by Geoff Tilley (reprinted from Multiverse #21) (18)
  • Projekt: Heinrich by Catherine M. Stewart (23)
  • Kill Straker, poem by Douglas Cummins (44)
  • Cloude Eye by Catherine M. Stewart (reprinted from Enarraré #6) (46)
  • Bitter Victory by Cathy Lynn Goodwin (84)
  • Just Another U.F.O. by Geoff Tilley (86)
  • The Dalotek Affair, poem by Douglas Cummins (87)

The slash section:

  • Tip of the Iceberg by Felicity Granger (92)
  • Untitled Poem by Susan Clarke (109)
  • Stranger's Touch, Strangers Still, Strangers No More by Merlyn ("Gunslinger Paul Foster rescues a mysterious blond stranger from a small-town ambush and accidentally finds himself taking sides in a dispute which costs a lot of lives. For Foster, however, the rewards more than balance out the dangers.") (110)
  • Masks, Pt. 1 by Shona Katt (126)
  • Another Reality by Merlyn (133)
  • The Christmas Present by Elaine Leeke (138)
  • Nothing Left to Lose by Shannon (157)
  • The Blazing Light of Day by Khamsin (158)
  • Only Human After All by Anonymous (173)
  • Furlough by Felicity Granger (178)

Issue 2

UFO 2 is subtitled, "Reflections of a UFO Zine." It was a 100-page gen zine, and there was no age statement required to purchase.

It has art by Bruce Mitchell, Paul Richardson, Bernice, and Cathy Goodwin.

  • After Effect by Cathy Lynn Goodwin ("A sequel to the popular Internal Security Alarm (in Reflections of a UFO Zine). Ed Straker is still suffering from psychological damage inflicted by the death of, and betrayal by his friend. "Virginia was trying to piece the problem together: 'Would I be right in thinking his anger may stem from betrayal?' Jackson looked impressed, 'A friendship betrayed, yes. In this case, doubly so.'")
  • UFO Quiz Answers ("The answers and announcement of winners in the Quiz from UFO Zine 2.")
  • The First Tuesday in April by Catherine M. Stewart ("A tongue in cheek look at a security breach for SHADO. 'Mr Straker has gone to the moon,' Ms Ealand informed the press coldly The fact that she was speaking nothing but the truth was completely lost on the media.")
  • Wreaths and Roses by Cathy Lynn Goodwin ("SHADO faces its greatest loss. 'When Ford reported that the alien craft had come down somewhere in the vicinity, Gay knew what her next move would be.'")
  • With A Little Help from My Friends by K. ("Paul Foster falls victim to a plot to destroy both him and SHADO. 'The pills. I need the pills. I have to think I'm so tired...I don't know'.")
  • Liability by Cathy Lynn Goodwin ("After being the only survivor of a UFO attack, Operative Peter Hamilton must find the strength to save his companion's life. "Gasping for breath, he could feel his face and hands burning. The survival unit seemed an eternity away... His uniform was smouldering. Tears streamed down his face from tortured eyes...")
  • Target of Opportunity by Cathy Lynn Goodwin ("In a cat and mouse game of war, it becomes difficult to tell who is the hunter, SHADO or the aliens..."Without conscious thought, O'Neill swerved and body-checked Straker out of harm's way as he fired simultaneously, bringing down the alien with a single shot.")
  • Mad!! Is someone in SHADO insane? by Persona Non Gratis

Issue 4

cover of issue #4

UFO 4 is subtitled, "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble." It is one 70-page (approx. 36,000 words, no filler) story written by Dale E. Jones. Art by Paul Richardson. The second edition was published in 1996.

The flyer states that "Although gen, it does contain some adult concepts (no slash)."

Summary: "Ed Straker is kidnapped and replaced by an alien double. Faced with the disbelief of his SHADO colleagues, it is up to Straker's body guard to find out what has happened to the real Ed Straker, before Straker is killed by his kidnappers."
