Reactions and Reviews
1991
The basic concept of the Mirror officers beaming to the Mainline universe Enterprise to ask for assistance was, if not completely original, different enough to attract my attention. I did, however, have an ambivalent response to the make-up that Mirror Kirk and Mainline Spock wore to the Emperor's party. From one perspective, it was quite a turn-around of 20th century expectations. Not only was it men wearing make-up rather than women, but they were wearing it in a reverse of the usual function of make-up. It was meant to uglify rather than beautify. I appreciated the irony of this. On the other hand, I disliked the fact that it was assumed that women would be experts at make-up, and should be consulted about it. Would this still be true in the 23rd century? [1]
I have to admit, this would not be classed as one of my favorite of Ms. Moretti's stories. There were a couple of spots where I felt the mainline Kirk's character slid off the mark — specifically his reaction to knowing what "make an example of" was. He has just never seemed to me the type to fall apart in a crisis — after, maybe, but not before or during. Other than that, however, I found the premise interesting and the story very readable. [2]
