Troops is a ten-minute long 1997 fan film by Kevin Rubio.
The film is a parody of COPS, set in the Star Wars universe.
It was produced by TheForce.Net and debuted at San Diego Comic-Con International on July 18, 1997.
"Troops" was a first in the modern fan film movement. It was also one of the first fan films of the digital age that capitalized on internet distribution, as well as high production with its special effects and costumes.
George Lucas was an admirer of the film, something that Henry Jenkins talked about at some length in his speech, The Poachers and the Stormtroopers: Cultural Convergence in the Digital Age. In that speech, Jenkins points out the differences between this film's public reception and acceptance in relation to one of the many crackdowns by Lucas of fanfiction.
Lucas didn't waver on his admiration; five years later, he gave the film the first Pioneer Award in the Lucasfilm-sponsored 2002 Official Star Wars Fan Film Awards.
