Reactions and Reviews

A new Vulcan joins the Enterprise, and Kirk gets jealous. Is made of win for this line alone: (McCoy to Kirk) a person???s sexual orientation isn???t part of his Starfleet record any more... And thank goodness, because what would we put down for you??????yes to all of the above??????? [1]

This is the first time that I've reviewed an on line-only story—if indeed that's what it is. I've always found this author's work to be very satisfying to read, and I know she can be found in print zines and on line. I'm actually not sure if TOUCH has found its way into print or not. Either way, it's an interesting story with a lot of dialogue, and apparently written in response to a challenge. (If I have any criticisms of the story, it's the inclusion of the challenge phrase,'he's gay, Jim' and an echo of it at the end, which sound a little forced).

Basically, Jim is watching Spock in the Rec room. Spock's talking and gesturing to a new Vulcan crew member, an engineer, and McCoy informs him that Sulak is propositioning Spock. Jim is... shocked. On lots of levels. I love this. He barely listens to Bones, trying to justify his feelings to himself aloud ( 'I do want him to be happy') and, when he clearly can no longer bear to watch or follow where his own thoughts are taking him, announces to the Doctor that it's time he said hello to Sulak himself. We can feel McCoy's amusement as Jim strides across to the Vulcans and sees at once that whereas the new engineer wasn't expecting Kirk to arrive, Spock perhaps... was. (As I may have said, this is very skilled writing.) Well, our Captain makes short work of Sulak, who takes the hint and returns to engineering, leaving him to plan to see Spock privately for chess.

With no preliminaries, we are then with them in Spock's quarters, playing chess. Fast. Too fast, really, for Kirk, who says as much and they take refreshment. It is then that he tries to apologise to Spock for interrupting his time with Sulak earlier and Spock finally states—beautifully—that he, Sulak, and even McCoy were fully aware of what Jim was doing in that room: 'You were claiming me... claiming me as t'hy'la.' Wow! This statement hits Kirk, and us, and his first reaction is to deny it, a tad halfheartedly, maybe... Spock, of course, soon shows him the truth with a mind touch that arouses them both and the sex that follows is HOT, but even more satisfyingly, an integral aspect of the story, where we continue to learn more about the characters. Aren't these, ultimately, the very best sex scenes? Oh, and the part where Spock explains why he let Kirk see his encounter with Sulak is rather good, too! Go find this story, if you haven't already: you won't regret it![2]

Bones informs Jim that their new Vulcan ensign is gay and into Spock. Jim finds he doesn't like that one bit... For manipulating Bones and Kirk assuaging his claim even while still clueless about his own feelings. [3]
