Tom, Dick and Harry

[Tom, Dick and Harry]: I don't normally read much other than Q these days, but the title here tricked me into it. I like Paris stories, and this title hinted at having a sense of humor besides just having Paris in it. And, whaddaya know? I was right. This was a wonderful story, and I made sure to save it so that I could read it over. After this, I made sure to keep an eye out for Emma's stories period, because they're definitely worth hunting for! [1]

[Tom, Dick and Harry]: This was one of the first Paris/Kim stories I read, and yes, I'll admit, I'm a sucker for an emotional Paris. The scene with B'Elanna and Tom in the 'Navigation area' (where you can only see space) doesn't quite ring true - I'm not convinced that B'Elanna would act in quite that way, but even so, it worked. Emma's writing made me enjoy even the bits I didn't like. Good writing, great story. [2]

[Tom, Dick and Harry]: AWESOME, WONDERFUL, ROMANTIC, SEXY, TOUCHING! This story was almost my first introduction to P/K and what a great introduction it was! "Emma" is a godsend! [3]

[Tom, Dick and Harry]: Well, a) LOVED the title. I guess they were really asking for it with characters named Tom and Harry, but still, it's just very funny. b) I also loved the whole scene in the cave, with Tom making his offer to Harry so hesitantly. c) I also reread this story All The Time. [5]

There are so many good Voyager slash writers out there that it's impossible to pick a single favorite. If I had to narrow it done to a few favorites, "Emma Woodhouse" would be on that list. She's a wonderful writer, combining nice plotting with hot sex scenes. And this story, the first of her P/K series, is no exception. It's another one of those TrekSmut stories with fairly simple plot elements: Tom and Harry, a cave and some hormones.

Well, maybe it's not that simple. Yes, the boys do get stuck in a cave, a complication that is compounded when Harry breaks his ankle. Forced to sleep together because of the cold, they end up kissing in the middle of the night, each sure that the other is asleep and dreaming. Building on the tension of the first night, their second night is pure male bonding as they tell each other about their top "fantasy babe" on the Voyager.

The talk naturally moves on to how much Harry misses being physically close to Libby and Tom surprises both of them by offering himself as a replacement. Harry's questioning of this rather extraordinary offer leads to Tom's confession about his time in prison.

Which brings us to the issue of Paris-angst and how to write about it.

While assuming what many P/K writers assume (that Tom was raped while in prison), Emma handles the subject carefully. Her Tom got out of New Zealand bruised, but not broken, and he has enough self-knowledge to admit that maybe if he actually makes a gift of what was first taken by force he won't feel so contaminated. The whole first time experience is wonderfully written, with touches of humor and seriousness that make it seem very real. And, as I said above, Emma can write a sex scene like nobody's business, hot and tender, and certainly worth reading more than once. Not too surprisingly, they spend the rest of their time in the cave fucking "like mad minks" (as Tom puts it at one point).

Of course being lovers in a cave when there's no one else around turns out to be easier than being lovers on Voyager, particularly for Harry. His conscience nagging him about his promises of fidelity to Libby, he calls the affair off, not knowing that the effect is devastating to Tom. How they get back together, with the help of B'Elanna, I'll leave to you to discover. Yes, this story does contain what has been called "P/K teen-angst," but through all of it Emma manages to keep both men in character. Her Harry is earnest and determined to do the right thing, and her Tom is all brittle wit on the outside and deep emotional need on the inside. On top of it all, Tom, Dick, and Harry is no dreary angst fest, there are many funny moments, particularly as B'Elanna tries to figure out what's going on between the two friends.

So read this one for the characterizations, the intelligent handling of a delicate subject, the humor and the very hot sex. You'll be glad you did, particularly since you have more of this series to look forward to, and take it from me; they just get better. [6]

[all stories]: Emma's story Tom, Dick, and Harry has a very special place in my heart: the very first Voyager story I read, and the one that jerked me squarely into slash fandom . . . TD&H, Life Wish, and Unforgettable are three of the most enjoyable stories I read last year, and I have read all three of them many times over. Emma is *great* at making things happen in her stories--her characters draw you in and the plots are very creative and engrossing. She brought Q to Voyager much more effectively than the writers on the show did (Life Wish), she got Tom and Harry joined in a Vulcan mind meld (The Valley), she showed us what "Prison Tom" was like (Unforgettable), and she even found a way to get Tom together with an In Vitro from Space: Above and Beyond (in one of the hottest stories of the year, Who Watches the Threshold?). And through it all, the romance is to die for. [7]

[Tom, Dick and Harry, and Lifewish]: Liked this first story ('mad minks' ranks right up there with "Once you've been greased with leola root..." as the most memorable line of any a.s.c. story ever posted) but I *loved* the sequel, "Lifewish." One of the most satisfying stories I've read, and delightful prose. [8]

Tom, Dick, and Harry by Emma Woodhouse is an absolute must-read for any P/Ker; it's one of the classics of the genre. A sweet and tender first-time story with some really hot sex and a dash of angst thrown in -- what more could you ask for? A sequel, of course, and the lovely and talented Emma has given us two, both extremely, wonderfully, angst-laden: Lifewish and Unforgettable.[9]
