Reactions and Reviews

1990

A sweet, sensitive story, effectively illustrating the deep feelings Kirk and Spock have for each other. I liked the nice, slow way Kirk realised his affection for the Vulcan. And the ending scene with the two of them awkwardly (at first) dancing seemed just right. The part about the 'teddy bear' being Kirk's first First Officer was a nice, unexpected touch. [1]

1991

This is a simple little meat and drink, K/S story. No tremendous excitement. No real suspense. Just a sweet 'moving toward each other' and finally joining, loving story. The kind you always read with pleasure. The love scenes were perfect for it. [2]

1999

Kirk’s mom is getting married — and it makes him realize just how lonely his own life is. He’s decided he can never have it all — his ship and someone to love. Yeah, the results are predictable, but very well “acted” by the characters under this writer’s direction.

McCoy counsels Kirk that there’s an answer right on board the Enterprise, but other than driving Kirk nuts trying to figure out which female this might be, it doesn’t help much.

There’s an especially nice point where Kirk confesses to Spock that McCoy is driving him crazy and the response is “He does have the ability to elicit such a response in most rational beings, Jim.” Hearing this, Kirk blurts out “Ghod, Spock, I love you!” without understanding what he’s really saying.

I always enjoy trips home to Iowa and this is no exception. It’s mom’s prospective husband who figures out who it is that Kirk’s pining for, and insists Spock be invited to the wedding.

Mrs. Kirk has a very realistically depicted difficulty with this pairing, but tries to come to terms. She’s a very well defined character and I liked her a lot.

And Spock—this time Spock is the self-assured one! That makes for some great reading and a Vulcan I’d love to meet and have for a friend.

Very, very satisfying. Yum!! [3]
