Reactions and Reviews
This Mirror first-time scenario is just right; also a unique and simple rebellion scenario. This author obviously has so much good K/S to tell, I can see how it's all just aching to get out onto the page, but then this can make so much of the information read in the "told-not shown" manner. Still, the story is so good; it's just that in places we're deprived of the more visceral and immediately emotional experience of reading something that engages us in the moment. Mirror is so enjoyable, of course, for those of us who like it. This story is all in the Mirror universe, after Mirror Kirk had been in our universe, where he learned that our Kirk and Spock are lovers. Great depiction of a ranting and raving Kirk, now obsessively wanting his Spock. Deliciously hot scene of him walking in on Spock in the shower, the first time he takes Spock. (In one place, though, there might be too much detail of the "right hand here, left hand there, he put this there" sort.) This was the best sex ever for Kirk; and a gorgeously dominating Kirk it is. Though there's no tenderness afterwards. We also get Spock's POV, how he'd wanted Kirk for a long time, but does wonder what Kirk thinks of his allowing himself to be taken, when he could so easily overpower Kirk physically. It's a nice development of feelings that follows, how Kirk has to get over a lot of resistance to feeling, giving. One turning point is when they sleep together the first time; and then there's no secret about their relationship, Spock being the Captain's Man. They share a lot about their painful and loveless pasts. The trust is developing not only between Kirk and Spock, but the crew also. However, Kirk won't let Spock fuck him, not yet. I like this scenario, of having to work through that resistance. This has a unique element to it, though, in that in all of Spock's past sexual involvements, he had always been the penetrator, too; but here he is letting Kirk have him in that way. Here's the really cool part as far as the rebellion scenario. We had seen Kirk being open to joining Spock in the rebellion. Now another ship, the Lexington, is in a fight with a rebel ship. It's a nail-biting scene, as Kirk gives orders to join the Lexington against the rebels...silently daring Spock to go against him...but Spock doesn't go against him...and Kirk knows Spock is really his...and when they get to the Lexington/rebel battle, Kirk orders fire on the Lexington, not the rebels! Yeah! So the Enterprise is with the rebellion, but with Kirk as leader, of course. And then a lovely ending between just the two of them, warm and sweet in a Mirror way, and full of promise. [1]
I just loved how this mirror story begins—Kirk barges into Spock’s steamy bathroom and fucks him then and there. Then he just walks out. Lots of very, very sexy sex—definitely becoming a trademark of this author’s stories—strong and exciting—quite appropriate to the mirror universe. I happened to notice that Kirk is always the onein command and Spock is the willing participant. But this is, after all, the mirror universe! They continue their sexual liaisons all over the ship. I love all the places they did it—especially the bridge and especially in the command chair. One of my ultimate K/S fantasies. Except it really wasn’t enough— the scene could have been expanded.
So gradually the truth emerges that they are in love with each other, but neither is willing to say it.
Then the pivotal moment of an imminent rebellion I just loved that they were fucking right when the red alert sounded!) and they fight the Empire together.
The story ends in a very clever way—instead of ending where they have sex, it ends where they kiss.
However—practically the entire story is told to us. There’s barely any dialogue—lots of “had” past tense that had happened. And such neat ideas, but maybe too many because I would have loved to have seen at least some of them. It’s almost as if this is the first draft of a story.
Terrifically interesting backgrounds of Kirk and Spock, but again, mostly all told in just a paragraph or two of both having told the other about what had happened. [2]
