Reactions and Reviews

1994

I liked this story. I would say that Murphy's Law was definitely in force here, I found the characters of Kirk and Spock to be operating almost in reverse here then they usually do. Spock has no problem expressing to Kirk how he feels about him. Kirk is the one with the reservations in this story. Kirk is afraid that his past has caught up with him and wants Spock to wait a while longer to show Spock's family and Vulcan that he can be faithful to Spock. Sarak also appears in this story.

There is a minor character here that plays a major role in the story, named Ensign Angliss. Naturally she is madly in love with Kirk and naturally Murphy's Law goes to work.

The captain has received "orders" from Admiral Morrow about a charitable cause his wife favors, So, of course, all the ships' captains are going to contribute to it. A number of them have chosen to use the "win a dinner date with your captain" approach, So Kirk figures why shouldn't he do the same.

Ensign Angliss is of course the winner. She has naturally taken the contest beyond just a dinner date. She arranges for a room in the hotel where the dinner is to take place, hoping to get Kirk up to her room for some after dinner entertainment. Kirk has no idea of this, of course.

Spock isn't "happy" with Kirk's approach but can't talk him out of it. Kirk has promised a great evening with Spock after his dinner, Spock and Sarak have dinner together and discuss Spock's choice of a bond mate. Sarak isn't sure of Spock's choice and has a wait and see attitude.

I don't want to give away any more of the story but I can say that just about whatever can go wrong does in this story. It is a likable story. [1]

A lovely story with wonderful dialogues, I enjoyed it from the first till the last sentence! My favorite scene is when Spock tells his father about his bondmate - to -be: "Spock found himself wondering, whether his father's recently - repaired heart would hold out, or if the strain his son was putting him through might undo Dr. McCoy's delicate reconstruction" This is our Spock with his dry humor!
