Reactions and Reviews
'To Dance with a Warrior" by Karin Porter is a 28 page story. I guess the best way to describe this story is just to say, sex, more sex, and then some more sex. These are the mirror universe Kirk and Spock right after "Mirror, Mirror" ends. The problems with Mariena and the Halkans are soon solved. And then after this, we head into the sex which basically is 70 per cent or so of the story. This ISS Kirk is more than willing to be taught by Spock about the warrior ways of Vulcan.I wasn't too enchanted by the beginning of the story and was definitely getting worried when Kirk threatened to start killing Halkan children.
However, once the sex part started, I found myself very interested in the way Karin made the sex fresh and managed to prolong the sex through so many pages without being boring. Yes, it is possible after reading thousands of K/S scenes to be bored with K/S sex. I didn't believe it at first, but it did finally happen to me when I started skipping through some of the sex scenes in stories I was reading because there just wasn't anything fresh or new about them. I recommend this story. It wasn't just the same old first time story written with a few different adjectives or changes in bodily positions. [1]
Maybe I haven't read a mirror story in a while, so it was fun to read this lively one, which also had interesting and unique Vulcan aspects to it. This takes place ail in the mirror universe, after our characters have been there and the mirror characters have been in our universe. I enjoyed this also, staying in the mirror universe; it seems more frequent that mirror stories focus on our characters rather than on the others.I did feel some places were "told," such as when we're given Kirk's and Spock's inner thoughts spelled out fully, instead of revealing them in other more subtle or dramaticways. Plus there were many POVs going on at once, not especially presented in the best way.
Be that as it may, the mirror universe is nicely fleshed out here, with the Halkens, the Emperor, Mariena, the operatives. I won't say it all, but there was a good and clear-cut storyline.
And beyond that, there was great sexy stuff, too. It seems mirror Kirk had been with our Spock in our universe, so now he can't help wondering if his Spock could have feelings for him.
The repartee between them, both in their shipboard/Empire business and as they begin to take their pleasure with each other, is really sharp and feels like a plausible mirror ambience. I do like the early scene with Kirk watching through the Tantalus Device as Spock has sex with two unbonded male warriors, and how much it turns Kirk on. He watches this while having sex with Mariena, or else he couldn't get it up for her anymore.
But the unique thing about this story is the depiction of Vulcan warrior-mating ways. This happens through Spock teaching Kirkabout Vulcan warrior bondings. Kirk is curious about these Vulcan pairs on board, and so in the gym, Spock begins to lead him through the whole ritual thing that the warriors go through before actually consummating their relationship. This was a creative depiction of some innovative Vulcan things I've not seen before.
Hot scenes—much arousal and great verbal foreplay. A pleasing aspect of dominance/submission also. This goes on for some number of days while they get closer and closer, while Kirkcomes to trust Spock as he has no one else, while Kirk gets hotter and hotter to be fucked by the Vulcan. Indeed. There are many pages of sex, both ritual and actual.
This is a good addition to our mirror lore. [2]
Wow—read this and just cut to the chase -- the best voyeur sex scene ever! Mirror Kirk watches Mirror Spock on the Tantalus Device do the nasty with his operatives. All this while he does it to Mariena. This is hot. This is very hot. Go directly to this part of the story. Do not pass GO. Spock teaches Kirk about the warrior bond with lots of naughty Mirror things going on. Not the best written, but who cares? Lots of smoldering, passionate hot sex.
My kind of story. [3]
Mirror Kirk is back on the ISS Enterprise, faced with the problem of determining whether his own Spock feels about him the way our Spock feels about our Kirk. Also the problem of what to do about Marlena - nicely solved without bloodshed. Apart from that, the story is pretty much a long string of sex scenes as Spock guides Kirk through the process of establishing a warrior bond between them - which involves an elaborate series of martial-arts type moves and requires Kirk to successfully be the first to disrobe his partner at least once.
