Summary

"Stranded by a shuttle crash, Kirk and Spock are taken prisoner by the natives to by sacrificed to their sun god."

Reactions and Reviews

The story starts with Kirk accompanying Spock on leave on a planet with just discovered interesting archaeological sites. Kirk just wants to spend some time with Spock and is not so interested in the sites. They enjoy each other's company. This is an interesting start of the story, but it is not important for the story. On the return to the Enterprise their shuttle has to land on a planet. Their pilot is injured and presumed dead. Kirk has a concussion.

They are taken prisoners by the natives of the planet. An interesting description of the natives and their customs follows. They are sun worshippers and bring human sacrifices to the second sun of the system. This sun is very near and very hot and exposed to it, it kills within a few hours.

Spock is the first. He undergoes a cleansing ritual, different times, and is given drugs to make him feel happy and full of joy. Instead, it induces a sexual desire in him.

Finally, Kirk and Spock can talk about their feelings for each other and they make love. They make the best of the days left to them, although they both are desperate not to lose what they have so recently found. They try once to escape, without result.

When the time of the offering arrives, Spock destroys the link between him and Kirk. Kirk grieves alone in their cell, knowing that his turn will come next, and that he will be all alone then.

But luck is with them. Every now and then the sun disappears behind the moon during his cycle within the hour. That is considered a sign that the offer is very well accepted. So, Spock survived and returns, severely burned, to the cell and Kirk nurses him lovingly, relieved he has not lost everything worth living for. Next, they are back on the Enterprise. The rescue came rather suddenly for me. One moment they are in the cell, next they are on the Enterprise with a little explanation how the rescue took place.

Kirk and Spock are not certain of each other's feelings. The circumstances in the cell were very different, of course. Perhaps it only happens due to the drugs? Finally, Kirk goes to Spock's quarters to find out. He overhears Spock whispering in the bathroom that he loves him and then they are in each others arms again. So,all is well that ends well certainly goes for this story.

The story is the size of a novella. FT 12 contains of only 2 stories and this is the first. The characterisation of Spock is good. Kirk is somewhat vague in my point of view. There are a lot of nice details about the natives and their culture, as are in the first part. As interesting as it is, the first part, their leave on the planet could be left out. Itcould have been used for another interesting story, however.[1]
