The Young Ones is a British sitcom broadcast for two series in 1982 and 1984.
The fandom's most common ship is Rick/Vyvyan. In their 2006 ship_manifesto essay, nice_girls_play reported that "The Young Ones is a very, very, *very* small fandom, with less than fifty stories *total* posted online," 26 of which were at FanFiction.Net. As of 2024, there are 130 stories at FF.net and 338 at Archive of Our Own.
Scumbag Monthly Fanzine
Scumbag Monthly was an online fanzine for The Young Ones that was active from March 2020 until March 2023. The zine ran for 25 main issues, as well as two collections of front cover illustrations, a curation of The Comic Strip Presents... episode reviews from the zine, an issue celebrating the show's 40th anniversary, and three special issues released yearly on 9th June to commemorate Rik Mayall's passing in June 2014.
The zine's first issue[1] was published in March 2020, and published monthly until issue 19 in September 2021, where it was announced that it would be going on hiatus before switching to quarterly publications to allow more time for submissions and the development of new segment ideas. From issue 20 in Winter 2022 until the zine's conclusion in Spring 2023 it was published quarterly. The zine featured fanfiction, fan art, reviews, meta articles, and pages supposedly written and illustrated by the characters. Although primarily focused on The Young Ones, fanworks for other TV shows and movies starring Rik Mayall were also published on occassion, and the Rik Mayall commemorative issues featured fanworks and meta essays for Bottom, The New Statesman, Drop Dead Fred, and other shows and movies featuring Mayall.
After the final issue[2] of Scumbag Monthly was published on 1st March 2023, a post was made on the zine's Tumblr blog explaining the decision to conclude the zine and thanking the contributors and staff.[3]
