Reactions and Reviews: Issue 51

Virginia Waldron'a JOURNEY THROUGH THE SHADOWS is great, but I couldn't believe how she ended part 5! I'm hoping something supernatural will happen that will bring back Tracy/Josette. it will be interesting if Peggy Van Vlack writes further on the character of Clara Whitton which she created in "All Fall Down". I can almost see Barnabas telling the newly-resurrected vampire Clara, "I'm sorry, but you must find your own small town to hunt in." The story "Hunger's Flame' is another one I could see as a possibility (characters being true to form, I mean). Marcy Robin's story "Legacy" was very good. I also liked "FroM Victoria Winter's Journal" by Lynne Witten. [1]

I think my favorite was Janet Meehan's beautiful centerfold. I kept being drawn to it again and again, especially because of Vincent. The total picture was great. [2]

: Another great ish, but what else is new? The funniest piece was Adriana's vignette - that Joshua. I always knew that he was a real pussy (ha ha!) Her piece "The Sacrifice" again proves that she has a talent for making the unusual interesting, and nothing could be more unusual than the intriguing character of Laura - the writers of DS only scratched the surface with her past. Janet's centerfold hit a chord in that the characters she depicted were first decried as ugly villains, and yet in tine we grew to love them despite what others said. Yea, the Phantom cuts chandeliers, Vincent acta like a wild animal at times, and Barnabas may be guilty of unspeakable acts, but we forgive them - they're all human, and they aren't afraid to love, no matter what. Christine, Catherine, and Josette may not find lasting happiness with the men who love then, but wouldn't it be nice....? [3]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 52/53

I enjoyed this issue. especially the "Shroud" and "Gate" combo by Lori Paige, and the different moods of "Neaeaia" by Carol Maschke and "Light", also by Lori Paige. The ghosts were always coming to the "real" world in DS; It would have been interesting to see the ghosts' eye view that Ms. Paige portrayed in "Light" done on the series. / "Letter" by Warren Oddsson was very thought-provoking, I like his ideas on what might have gone on In June, 1971 and can agree with them. [4]

The latest TWODS was good, especially Warren Oddsson's map. He should have it enlarged and maybe marketed! Any chance he will do interiors and floor plans of the two mansions? [5]

I'm very pleased with this issue. You do a great job editing. I really like the variety of material you chose... It gives a real feeling how active and alive the network of fans is. [6]

I loved it! The cover was superb, as well as all the fiction and poetry. I truly enjoyed seeing scenes from 1967 with Anthony George us "Burke". They brought back man; fond memories of my childhood. Especially of sitting before the old Zenith, wondering when and how Barnabas was going to kill Burke. (I still believe that Barnabas somehow had a hand in the helicopter crash. After all, he vowed to Willie he was going to "get rid" of Burke. Several days - episodes, I mean -later, Burke's copter went down in the jungle of South America.) [7]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 54/55

This issue's tales were excellent; Sharon Wisdom's "Winter Child" is the most unusual DS story I think I've ever read, but very, very effective. Barbara Poirier'a "Barnabas Collins and the Reluctant Satanist" was my very favorite story in the entire issue. The relationship between Barnabas and Maggie was wonderful (I always did feel there were soap possibilities there), and the tone of the story struck me as being very optimistic. Good story1 I also liked 'Dream of Death" by Rob Haycock. Art excellent as always again; I especially liked Warren Oddsson's cartoon on the inside front cover. Elaine Keenan'a work on page 34 is also good, Janet Meehan'a front cover was great. [8]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 56

Received my first issue of TWODS, and although I'm told it is not a representative issue(i.e..no fiction), I couldn't put it down! The articles, illustrations, pictures, etc.. etc. are all first-rate! I can't wait for the next issue. Thank you so much for helping to keep "Dark Shadows" alive in those dark days of little fan activity! It's obviously paid off. [9]

I love the zine! My favorites are the artwork of Sherlock and Warren Oddsson. I enjoyed the interview with Terrayne Crawford. It gave great insight Into what she was doing with her life at the lime of DS and what she believes in. I also liked "An Evening of Readings With Jonathan Frld". It made me envious, that he is only doing shows In the east. I hope he will do some In the west. Other things I found interesting were The Collinsport Debating Society and Shadowed Queries. [10]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 57/58

The latest Issue of TWODS contained quite a melange of stories this time. Even though Mary Overstreet's sequel was quite long I did enjoy reading about "what happened next'. She sure put Willie through the emotional wrlngerl Sharon Wisdom's TIME SHADOW was unusual and a nice twist on time-travel possibilities. Rob Haycock's entry was chilling. He certainly has described Angelique in all her deadly attractive beauty. Megan Powell-Nivling's WELL MET BY MOONLIGHT was very good too, right-on-the-button descriptions of that calculating no-good creep Aristede. And Widow Devane sounds very intriguing. I hope Megan brings her back (for some reason she reminded me of Marie Wallace.) [11]

Superb! Warren's front and back covers were masterfully rendered, and of most interest to me were the bios on the cast of the new DS, the transcript from the press interviews, and Eric Newman's fine article on the video "The Best of DS." Thanks for putting out such a quality fanzine. [12]

My favorite story was the first one in the book, called "A Christmas Gift". I thought that it was very sweet and tender; Mary Jo is to be congratulated, purely a labor of love. It showed very much in her story. I also though TIME SHADOW was very interesting, although I don't know If Angelique would have given up Barnabas as easily as the story implies; rather, I think she would have readily agreed to go away with him, rich or poor. I don't think she would have just left, considering she married him on the TV series) despite his father cutting Barnabas off without anything Joshua even tried buying her off before they were married. They only stayed on the estate because Naomi gave them the Old House as a present. Realistically. I think Angelique would have been delighted to have Barnabas suddenly change in her favor and would have gone anywhere with him. [13]

Warren Oddsson has done it again, I loved the cover - the legacy continues. The back cover was intriguing - why was It called 'The Collector'? b It a salute to the classic Terence Stamp, Samantha Eggar film? Warren has realty captured the essence of Dan Curtis hin that drawing on page 24. A Pulitzer prize to Mary "John Karlen's #1 fan" Overstreet's "The Night Never Ended" it is a classic! This is great example of what DS fiction should be like -- capturing the spirit of DS, yet exploring new and exciting directions. That is what Mary has done so well, as has Virginia Waldron's latest chapter of her masterpiece In the making, "Journey Through the Shadows". Will the PT Maggie Trask be Barnabas' next "new Josette"? Loved the "Creeque Alley" filksong -- maybe David Short can retell the 1795 storyline to either "Nights In White Satin" or "Stairway to Heaven". [14]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 59/60

This was a great issue! It had something for everyone. Jeff Thompson's 'Festival Report' made me feel like I was still there. 'Jason's Rhyme' was great as was 'Willie, Poor Willie'. "When I Return' helped me to make sense of Barnabas' memory lapses when he was first released. Also enjoyed the poems by R. Billings and Cheryl Keiper. My favorite story however was 'Shinin' Like Magic" by Sharon Wisdom, it was a great story for anyone who wanted Julia and Barnabas to 'get together". I also love that it's from Willie's point of view, an added plus if you're a Willie fan too! I like the idea of a column for "new generation fans' and their artwork/stories. My nephew is a new fan and is a good artist. I'll have to tell him to submit something! Lastly, I loved "The Collinsport Debating Society" I think it's my favorite column. I love to hear what other fans think about various aspects of the show and the plotlines. etc. [15]
