Reactions and Reviews
1998
I enjoyed the first part of this story very much, the two brief encounters of the adolescent Kirk and Spock, in particular. The middle section, brief glimpses into Kirk and Spock's interaction and reactions during certain missions, was also good. The ending, however, felt as if it was pushed through at warp speed, resolving too much and establishing the physical side of the relationship too quickly. I also felt that given Spock's condition (blinded and debilitated after Deneva), Kirk's behavior during the sex scene was rather crude and demanding. I'd have expected him to be less lusty and more loving. [1]
Lovely beginning as Kirk and Spock meet as young boys at the sea shore, Spock is feeling sadness with his life on Vulcan and Kirk, who has come there with his father, talks to him. I loved Spock saying; "Vulcans do not cry1 while a tear goes down his cheek.Later, at the Academy. (I'm sorry; "salad was the only non-meat meal"? Excuse me?) Kirk has a fight in the mess hall (the one with no other vegetarian items besides salad) with Finnegan. Gary Mitchell is there and warns Spock away. Really neat as Spock remembers Kirk as "the boy at the beach".
Then on the Enterprise, Kirk is attracted to Spock, but fights his growing feelings. A number of events happen—events from "City On The Edge,.." where Spock loses all hope of a relationship and then Deneva where Kirk angrily confronts Spock with his "constant attention". After Spock goes blind, however, he's consumed with guilt because he told Spock to stop watching him. I really liked this theme and especially liked how it was woven throughout the story.
However, suddenly they have sex. not that they shouldn't have had sex. but this was extremely fast and seemingly out of nowhere. I shouldn't complain.
But this is beautiful: "I said I'd be there for you/" And a gorgeous ending: "I wish to discover a way to free the planet of the creatures so I may concentrate all my efforts on a cure for my blindness in order I can see your face the next time I make love to you."... [2]
