The Thick of It is a British comedy television series that satirizes the inner workings of modern British government.

The series is set in the fictional Department of Social Affairs (later the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship, or 'DoSAC'). It follows the interaction of the Department's Secretary of State, civil servants and advisors with Malcolm Tucker, the Director of Communications. Malcolm Tucker was widely considered to be a fictionalised version of Alistair Campbell, the Labour Government's Director of Communications at the time.

The show satirised the current affairs at the time of broadcast. Although parties are not named, it was understood that Malcolm Tucker's party was a populist left wing party rather like the British Labour Party, and the opposition were a centre-right party analogous to the Conservative Party.

Seasons 1-3 were set during a period of New Labour Government, while series 4 was set during a coalition government. As there was a change in the parties in power between series 3 and 4, the focus shifted to show the interactions between Malcolm Tucker's party in opposition and the workings of the coaltion government at DoSAC. Major news stories that were referenced in the series included the Parliamentary expenses scandal, the union-backed victory of a surprise candidate in the Labour leadership contest, and the Leveson Inquiry.
