Summaries

A free 'zine for fans of Doctor Who new and old, welcoming all view points but particularly those of female fans. Its pages are packed with art, fiction, poetry, reviews, analysis, parodies, filk and general silliness with an aim to entertain, share and elucidate. [1]

What I like best about the Doctor Who community is its diversity. I know there’s a stereotype of inflexible, obsessive anoraks, middle-aged men with social problems and body odor issues, but it’s just that: a stereotype. I’m a 20-something-year-old female—and as you’ll see, the authors and artists involved in this, our inaugural issue, run the gamut. We are a cross-ocean network, covering several US and UK cities as well as Finland. Some of us are “new” Who fans, while others have been watching the show since the ‘70s and ‘80s. Importantly, many of the contributors, you will find, are female. While Doctor Who Magazine’s latest poll still showed the men outnumbering the women 2 to 1, we are an undeniable presence and growing. I was tempted to make TTZ a fan magazine for women, by women, but that’s obviously missing the point. I wanted to show diversity, so why close off half the population? Certainly we can all co-exist in this crazy Who world! But that’s another area of diversity—I’ve tried to include pieces on the new series, the “classic” series, and everything in between. There’s poetry, paper dolls, personal essays, scholarly essays, reviews, art, comics, and sheer silliness. So who am I and why am I doing this? As far as Whozine experience, I haven’t much, though Paul Castle has been letting me contribute to Shooty Dog Thing for the past three issues, and I did work three years on Scribendi Magazine as well as copyedit and fiction edit Swansea Review. So let’s say I had a vision. I don’t have Scribendi’s budget, so as much as I’d like this effort to be a glossy 8” x 9” printed wonder, you have to content yourself with an attractively-packaged PDF which you’re welcome to print out or readon-screen, free of charge.
