Reactions and Reviews

This story is about eleven pages and mentions various incidents/episodes, among them the evil Kirk and Janice Rand story, Omicron Ceti III, and "Amok Time." The title has a double meaning. Only one meaning is the literal one-that Spock is teaching a survival skills course on the Enterprise. I think this story needs more development and needs to be longer. I think this could be an excellent thirty page story. (And, yes, I know how hard it is to write a story that long.) Too many incidents/episodes are mentioned in these brief eleven pages. [1]

This story raised so many emotional issues and touched on so many episodes, it raised my hackles too! I was confused, frankly. I realize that the overriding theme was Spock's conflicted nature and Kirk's guilt, but they had so many dreary issues it's a wonder they could function as Captain and First at all. Also, to my displeasure, there was no love scene which always leaves me gritting my teeth. One irritation was Kirk admitting to McCoy that he loved Spock; it was too out-of-the-blue, not enough build up to warrant the declaration. Suddenly and with no reason I could see, Kirk tells McCoy he loves Spock. No buildup, nothing. I'm sorry to be so negative because the writing was good. I just wanted more of it! [2]
