Reactions and Reviews
I liked “The Story” years ago when I first read it, and I still like it. It’s set on a beach on an Earth-like planet, where Kirk and Spock are waiting around with an assortment of life forms from many worlds (Vulcans, Klingons, etc.) while McCoy sorts through a bunch of zines, trying to find a good story for Kirk and Spock (and extras as needed) to act out.McCoy comes up with various types of stories, all of which are rejected for one reason or another. For example, hurt/comfort is out because neither Kirk nor Spock feel up to any more suffering. Eventually, McCoy suggests K/S. Here’s a little excerpt from that part of “The Story:”
“This planet is actually perfect for a K/S story,” McCoy continued reassuringly. “You and Spock are stranded on this planet, see, and...” “Where’s the ship?” Kirk asked, concern paramount in his mind.
“I don’t know!” McCoy snapped irritably, looking at his captain. “Somewhere...what difference does it make?”
“What difference?!” Kirk repeated. “It makes a difference to me! Do you think I’m going to lie around on some planet if the Enterprise is in trouble?”
Maybe I like “The Story” because I’m a sucker for stories that play with “reality.” Maybe I like it because Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are all very much in character. Maybe I like it because, in poking fun at cliches, the author manages to make some serious points about the implausibility of some of the situations that both pro and amateur Star Trek writers have gotten our heroes into from time to time. Or maybe I like it because it’s just plain fun to read.[1]
