Excerpt
"After a few moments of frantic shinnying, trying to ignore the rough bark painfully scraping his bare chest and arms, Kirk dared a downward glance. The irate grizzly was upright, both massive front paws against the tree trunk, glaring up at him with huge yellow teeth bared. She stood at least seven feet tall."
Reactions and Reviews
'The Stars of Home' by the late, dearly missed Jean Hinson, takes us back to Yosemite after the encounter with Sybok and deals with Kirk‘s eternal ability to get himself into the most unfortunate situations. Once more, the subject of life and death rears its head. [1]
I'm afraid I didn't care for the metaphysical discussion in this story. I like my metaphysics integrated with the plot. I also thought the story wavered too much between seriousness and comedy, that made it difficult to establish a mood. When Kirk asked Spock why he couldn't engage in PDA in front of the Kiingons, I wasn't sure if he was serious or teasing. If this was supposed to be a serious conversation, I don't think Kirk would have asked. Kirk would have made it his business to know that the Kiingons were homophobic if homosexuality was so offensive to then that K/S could set back Klingon/Federation relations 50 years.[2]
