The Scarlet Pimpernel is a play/novel (1903, 1905) by British author Emma Orczy set during the French Revolution. It has several sequels and numerous adaptations. Wikipedia credits its hero Sir Percy Blakeney, aka the Scarlet Pimpernel, as the original hero with a secret alter ego;[1] he has similarities to Bruce Wayne/Batman. Other characters include his wife, Marguerite St. Just, a French actress, her brother Armand, and Chauvelin, the main antagonist.
Some of the adaptations star well-known actors who have their own fanbases: Leslie Howard (1934 film), Anthony Andrews (1982 tv movie), Richard E. Grant (1999 tv series).
