Reactions and Reviews

1986

"The Rumor" by Natasha Solten. The two friends, Kirk and Spock, have never encountered the rumor that they are lovers until confronted with it by Adm. Nogura who believes it and wishes to consult them about promotions and future job placement. Since Starfleet has a policy not to separate couples, K and S can virtually choose where they would like to serve together. Shocked at the assumption, the two are forced to face the rumor, which gives them ideas they've never thought of before. Wonderful idea, wonderfully executed. [1]

Starfleet brass call Kirk and Spoek in to discuss the truth of "The Rumor". They think that if the two men are bonded, then they should be housed together and that certain changes should be made to insure the smooth running of the ship. This mature, thoughtful story by N. Solten examines how a rumor opens the truth to two men. [2]

You don’t have to guess as to what that rumor could be. Just give it one try and you’ve got it. (haha). “Funny things happen at the Forum;” Forum in question being Nogura who very delicately tells them about a rumor which happened to be around for ages. For one of the few times Kirk is absolutely speechless, a sight to behold. The logical thing to do is to substantiate it with facts. Better for them and better for us or it would’ve been a sad ending. [3]

4.5/5: I enjoyed this one. There were a few words that were spliced in half, a leftover from when this was printed on paper, and Vger was spelled as Vejur, which was a little weird, but that's how it's spelled in the Novelisation, so I suppose it's fine. I put mentions of rape in the warnings despite it being just a throwaway line cause it came out of nowhere and was quite jarring. All of these are non-issues to me, though, and I still really liked this fic. It was cute.[4]
