The Plague Dogs is a book by Richard Adams, which was later made into an animated film. It was his third novel, after Watership Down and Shardik

Canon

The book introduces two dogs - Rowf and Snitter - who are experimental subjects at an animal testing facility called Animal Research (Scientific and Experimental) [or ARSE]. They escape and try to find a better life. Due to a number of brain surgeries, Snitter is prone to hallucinations and visions. The pair meet up with a fox (The Tod) who helps them survive, until they are hunted down as sheep killers and potentially carrying the bubonic plague. The book is an example of Tuckerization, as Adams wrote in versions of two of his friends, Ronald Lockley and Sir Peter Scott.

The book was made into an animated film in 1982, with a change to the ending.
