The Paul Darrow Zine was a publication of Gathering, a Blake's 7 news service.
It was published with the approval of Paul Darrow, but was not an official publication: "GATHERING" would like to record a very special "Thank you" to Paul and Janet Darrow for their kindness and help and to dedicate this zine to both of them."
One Issue, With Supplements Issued
The "first" issue was published shortly after October 1980. It was a single issue that was designed for fans in a way that they could add supplements.
The latter seems to be backed up by two things: one was a place on the first inside page of what appears to be the first issue, called "SPACE FOR RECORDING ADDITIONAL INSERTS (UPDATES SENT OUT IN FUTURE)."
The other clue is this statement from what appears to be the first issue: "This fanzine of Paul Darrow contains the "Monday Interview," Paul's career details and information about him. All new members to GATHERING will receive a copy of the zine. You'll notice that instead of being stapled, it is "tied together" -- this is in order that when we receive more information, about Paul's career for instance, we can run off a new page, which can be inserted easily in the zine. We will tell you where it fits in -- you can untie the zine, insert the page, re-tie it... In this way we can keep your information on Paul up to date and in one book form. We will also issue updated Indexes [1] from time to time."
Who Was in Charge?
Ann Wigmore dealt with membership and accounts.
Kathy Dewey dealt with correspondence and enquiries.
Pat Jenkins did the typing, writing, printing, and helped with the photo orders.
The Main Zine
The zine is not dated but there are two clues to its publication date. One is the notation that the interview with Darrow was on Monday, October 20th, the other was a mention by Darrow about "your (The LPF & Horizon's) Convention," which he mentions will be in May.
This first publication contains 18 pages of single-spaced, very dense type.
It contains:
- Introduction, which includes very detailed instructions on how to take photos with a camera off of a television screen (1)
- The Monday Interview (This is the main part of this zine: a charming and informative chatty interview with Paul Darrow that was conducted on Monday, October 20, 1980 at the National Film Theatre. It is done in the format of a magazine interview, and is not a transcript. The interview was an hour long. This interview is notable in that it took place before the third season aired. Darrow talks much about the direction of the show, fandom, his career, books he likes to read, his fellow castmates, Avon's character...) (3)
- Paul Darrow Career Details (15)
- Favourite Theatre Roles, Theatre Performances (17)
