Reactions and Reviews

1990

As usual, Ms. Scott has given us a well-plotted, thought-out story with excellent characterizations. The tempo of this story was just right, neither too fast, nor too slow. I'd like to have seen our Spock's reaction when he returns to the Enterprise and finds out that Kirk had been with the mirror Spock. [1]

I really liked the central concept of this story. The idea that the mainline universe Kirk and Spock were connected to the Mirror a/u Kirk and Spock, so that what happens to one pair happens to the other is fascinating and highly original. There was oniy one minor plotting problem. Mirror Kirk beams his Spock out of imperial prison saying he wants to interrogate him. and then keeps him aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for five days without a peep from the imperial authorities. They don't ask Kirk about what he learned, or the status of the prisoner—notning, not a word. I would have found it more believable, if after a day of Kirk's supposed interrogation an Imperial official had communicated with Kirk. Then Kirk could have fobbed him off with the story of Spock working undercover among the rebels. The Empire has to be concerned about the status of a prisoner who'd been engaged in treasonable activities for the sake of its own survival.[2]

1996

A clever, unusual scenario. I love this, Mirror in slightly later years, when our Spock is on Gol. McCoy goes back to the Mirror universe, to ask Mirror-Spock to come back with him, to be with our Kirk so Kirk won't kill himself with drink, etc. Our Kirk and Spock had been lovers.

And as far as Mirror Kirk and Spock, McCoy plays go-between with them also, trying to convince them there are indeed bonds of loyalty and affection between them, if they would both just stop resisting. But the Mirror pair play a deadly game here. Fascinating dynamics. This Spock doesn't believe in sex, considers it a waste of precious energies. We see that M-Kirk is sorry he feels that way.

M-Spock had been imprisoned for traitorous activities, and I like the way his rescue by McCoy and M-Kirk was done—clever and simple, no torturous, contrived explanations.

Well, it turns out M-Spock comes to like it here in our universe, with Kirk, finds himself falling for that beautiful smile, the friendly acceptance, finds himself thinking sex with Kirk is not such a ludicrous idea.... When finally they succumb, the sex is marvelous. M-Spock is shamelessly wanting, then embarrassed and confused at his loss of control.

But then the real Spock is on his way back—how sad, sad. M-Spock: I did not expect to fall in love with you. Oh, my heart. Back in the Mirror universe, when M-Spock goes back to his Kirk, there is some wonderful resistance, including a great physical fight. McCoy visits one last time—the interface won't happen again for 20 years. He convinces M-Spock to teach his Kirk love. And he does.... Hot stuff; they want each other so much. Really beautiful.

Great story; and I want the story of 20 years later! [3]
