Summary
In "The Huntress," Guttridge brings the Enterprise officers to visit a world where the primary civilization is in the last stages of decadence. The obscenely wealthy ruler and his guests and friends live in opulent splendor, served by eunuchs. The common people live in squalor, having lost the will for exploration, creativity and progress, and barely able to cope with basic tasks of daily living. A few of the younger people still show some spirit and interest in life. They tell Spock of the great machines, still remaining from a long-ago age of sophisticated technology and now hidden away underground as the civilization crumbles. Spock also learns of the goddess Raarn the Huntress, who had once symbolized agency and initiative. Exploring beneath the city, he makes some fascinating discoveries which may help the young people to preserve the best parts of their culture.
