The Haven Project was an Orlando Bloom-centric slash archive. It had the subheader "Where Slashers honor the art of Slash". Each submitted story had to pass an anonymous review board before it was admitted. People could nominate stories by other authors and if these stories passed the requirements of the board, the authors were contacted for permission before including the story at the site. Stories were sorted by author, pairing, fandom, rating, lenght, and title.

Not all the listed fandoms actually had fanfiction submitted to them (Wilde, Midsomer Murders, Black Hawk Down, The Calcium Kid), but fiction for these fandoms would have been eligible. The site had an associated Yahoo! Group and and Livejournal for updates.

FAQ

What is the purpose of The Haven Project?

The Haven Project was designed as an expandable archive for Orlando Bloom fandom slash stories. The stories selected have been reviewed by a panel of knowledgeable slash fans and writers, and have been found to be exceptional. This site was designed to celebrate and encourage slashers who show enthusiasm, a skill for story telling, and a desire to excel in the craft of slash writing.

Why the title “The Haven Project”?
Very simply, this site is a sanctuary or haven for writers and readers seeking high quality slash in the Orlando Bloom fandoms. The word “project” is not used lightly as the creators and panel members understand that that is precisely what The Haven Project is. It is not an exact science or a “done deal”, and it will need the energy and enthusiasm of slash writers and readers to be a success.

Why only Orlando Bloom and his characters?
The members of the board are all Orlando Bloom fans and circulate primarily within the slash fandoms involving him or his characters. As they are exceptionally familiar with those fandoms, they are most qualified to evaluate work submitted within those fandoms. Plus, he’s gorgeous and his appeal, both in costume and out, crosses gender lines. Who could be more fun to slash?

Why slash?
The board members love slash. It is the opinion of the board and the creators of this site that all genres of writing can produce literature. Slash can be art, and this site celebrates that fact.

Why should I submit to The Haven Project?
The Haven Project is a site created and maintained by people who love writing and love slash. It is a welcoming and encouraging environment for writers. A spot on the pages of The Haven Project is earned. Therefore, it is an achievement of which the author should feel immensely proud. A group of writers, slashers and Orlando Bloom fans has acknowledged and appreciated your effort and talent, and has found your story to be truly exceptional. And even if your story is not accepted for posting, the board is supportive and will give you advice should you desire it.

Who is on the review board and why are they part of The Haven Project?
The review board is comprised of writers, readers and scholars of slash. Every member of the panel is a long-time slasher with an understanding of the elements of story telling and a sturdy grasp of the canon in all of Orlando Bloom’s fandoms. They each have extensive experience with the mechanics of writing and the study of literature, both professionally and recreationally. But like reviewers of film, art, and literature, it is a love of the artform that has brought the members of the review board to this project. The board members are not control-freaks, disgruntled authors, or bitter elitists. They want to encourage and support slash authors – experienced and inexperienced alike – because they believe that even “just slash” can aspire to excellence. Their goal is to foster and promote the talents and efforts of slashers who want to achieve excellence with their stories. They love slash and see no reason to settle for less than good writing.

Why set standards and create a review board for fanfiction?
The members of the board encourage all authors to write their stories and to post them publicly. However, as writers themselves, they also know, from their own experiences, that one of the most valuable assets any author can have is an honest opinion. Creativity and bravery should be supported, but bad grammar, poorly structured stories, and weak characterization should not be blindly praised. In the opinion of the board, to praise or ignore flaws is a disservice to the author as it encourages bad writing habits, which will always undermine any raw potential that may exist. Criticism is not an evil. The Haven Project exists for slash authors who are devoted to the craft and art of slash writing and have taken time and care with their stories. This is a site for writers, by writers, and while the board will encourage, they will not coddle.

Does The Haven Project think all slash sites should set standards and screen fics?
No. No one involved with The Haven Project will make any efforts to influence the posting practices of any of the current slash sites, groups, or livejournals. The Internet is an open forum and should remain as such. The standards for this site are for this site alone and if authors would prefer to post to a site that does not review submitted materials, the members of the board wholly support that choice.

Why are the board members and site creators anonymous?
One reason for anonymity is that public knowledge of who is on the board could compromise the objectivity of the board’s evaluations through outside pressure ranging from obligations to harassment.

Secondly, there is some concern that revealing the identities of the panel would overshadow the excellent authors featured at this site. As the site wishes to exalt, praise and assist serious writers, anything that threatens their spotlight will be stringently avoided. The final reason for anonymity is that no one involved in The Haven Project is naďve about how some will perceive this site. Some readers and writers will feel the panel members are being exclusive or pretentious and that this site is in defiance of the right of expression and the freedom of all to say what they want to say, how they want to say it. The board members and creators of this site recognize this viewpoint and do not seek to impose any standards on other slash sites. However, the site creators do not wish this difference of opinion and misunderstanding of intent to negatively affect the private lives, online personalities, or pennames of the board members.

Are all the stories on the site written by members of the board?
No. The overwhelming majority of stories on the site is and always will be by authors entirely unaffiliated with The Haven Project and the review board. Board members will not place their own stories on the site. Should someone unaffiliated with The Haven Project nominate a board member’s story, it will be evaluated on the same criteria as all other submitted stories.

Can I become a member of the board?
At this time, no, but should The Haven Project prove to be a great success, that might change as the number of submissions increases.

How do I submit to The Haven Project?
All submissions must have proper spelling, grammar, and formatting as well as a complete header (for an example, see our sample header) to be reviewed. Please send all submissions to [email protected].

Can I nominate someone else’s story for the site?
Absolutely! There are so many archives and so many great slash authors, the review panel couldn’t hope to find them all on their own. They would greatly appreciate your help. The submitted story will go through the exact same process that your own story would. However, as it was not your story, you will not receive a notice of either acceptance or rejection unless you inquire and you will not have the option of hearing the board’s feedback or advice in either event. The creators of the site will contact the author for permission before including the story at the site.

Does The Haven Project accept work from all authors?
Yes. In fact, The Haven Project can be an encouraging resource for all writers, provided they have a vested interest in learning about writing and expanding their skills. All stories will be evaluated individually and according to the same standards, regardless of author.

On what criteria do you evaluate stories?
Writing is the primary focus of the panel. To be reviewed, all stories must have correct spelling, grammar, formatting, and proper headers. The board members are looking for originality, enthusiasm, skill with the language, an effective storyline, compelling characterization, and adherence to canon and the spirit of the original material.

What fandoms do you accept?
The Haven Project accepts slash stories from within the various fandoms of actor Orlando Bloom. This includes Real Person Slash (RPS), “Casualty”, Wilde, “Midsomer Murders”, The Lord of the Rings, Black Hawk Down, Ned Kelly, The Calcium Kid, Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy, Haven, Kingdom of Heaven, and Elizabethtown and the list is ever-expanding as he continues to work.

What types of stories do you accept?
Any story will be considered, provided it is slash and includes Orlando Bloom or one of his characters. Both FPS and RPS are accepted, as well as all genres, ratings and lengths. All stories will receive the same attention and consideration, regardless of content.

Do you accept het or femslash?
Only if the primary pairing is male/male slash. This is a site for slash that revolves around Orlando Bloom and as he is male, all stories should feature male/male slash.

Do you accept WIPs (Works In Progress)?
No. The board cannot properly evaluate a story until it is completed. However, the story can be submitted when finished as the board does accept multi-chapter stories.

Do you give feedback to all submitted stories?
Feedback will be sent only for those stories declined by the panel and only upon request from the author.

What happens to my story when I submit to The Haven Project?
If your story arrives with a proper header, accurate spelling and correct formatting, it will be immediately distributed to the entire board. (Stories that are lacking a header or are in an improper format will be returned with suggestions so the author can correct them and resubmit.) The members of the board will read your story and then discuss it. This process usually takes a week, depending on the number of stories they’ve received. After all the members of the board have made their decision, the results will be tallied. If your story is declined, you will receive a private e-mail and the option to hear the feedback of the board, which you are not obligated to accept. If your story is accepted, you will receive a private e-mail and your story will be posted on the site.

If you accept one of my stories, will you put all my stories on the site?
No. Each and every story is reviewed and evaluated individually, so each one must be submitted and reviewed by the board.

If you do not accept my story, will you make the rejection public?
No. No one but you will ever know that you even submitted to The Haven Project. The goal is to support and encourage high standards in slash fiction, not to discourage or humiliate authors. The board members will never publicly behave in a malicious or petty manner and all submitting authors are treated with respect and discretion.

What does it mean if you do not accept my story?
It means that the submitted story did not gain unanimous support of the board. It does not mean the board does not like you. It does not mean you should never submit another story. It does not mean you should stop writing. One rejection is not a permanent rejection, and feedback will be gladly given upon request.

Will I be told why my story was not accepted?
Only upon request. If you would like specific feedback to explain why your story was not accepted, you may request feedback from the panel and it will be gladly given.

If my story is declined, can I resubmit it?

Reviewed stories that were declined will be accepted for resubmission only after an extensive rewrite.
