Reactions and Reviews

1991

This M/U story certainly wasn't the most pleasant to read, but it kept its focus and made its point. I wasn't totally convinced that Spock would know what was best for Kirk in terms of 'helping' him conquer his childhood traumas and conditioning — he's not a psychologist, after all-but this story was better than most with this theme. I would have appreciated a little warmth somewhere along the line, though don't know if any of these characters were capable of it. Spock obviously cared for Kirk, but his motivation seemed to come from such a cold, selfish level that it seemed he was 'curing' Kirk for his own benefit rather than the captain's. This was an intense story, and the harsh dialogue, actions, and memories left me a little queasy. [1]

I found myself extremely relieved by the time I reached the end of this story. It had, at once, repulsed and fascinated me - the images horrifying and compelling - it was like being released from a nightmare. I was also greatly relieved that there was no sweetness and light ending, only a possibility. [2]

2006

The ISS Spock puts on an elaborate charade to force his Kirk to confront his abuse as a child and free himself from the need to show no weakness, in order to love him. Some interesting aspects, but generally rather tedious and improbable. The father is unmitigatedly evil, and the all-knowing Spock is not terribly interesting. [3]
