Reactions and Reviews

The Claiming is the first part in a delightful trilogy by Kathryn Ramage. Reviews of the second and third parts For You and An Emotional State are forthcoming.

Building on the events and characters from the third season episode Second Skin, The Claiming explores an alternate (or at least unshown) timeline in which Bashir is kidnapped and tortured by Entek, an Obsidian Order agent, in the hopes of seeking revenge on Garak.

The Bashir shown in The Claiming is definitely the Bashir of the earlier seasons. While not quite as naive as in Past Prologue he still lacks the experience and maturity of fifth season Bashir. (Seeing the earlier Bashir was actually quite refreshing.) Bashir is ignorant as to Garak's feelings towards him and still unsure as to Garak's Obsidian Order past.

Garak's actions in The Claiming are consistent with the character we see on the screen, particularly with the Garak who appears in Second Skin. He is concerned about Bashir and willing to do anything in his power--which is quite considerable--and manipulate anyone to ensure Bashir's safe release.

The author skillfully portrays a slash story that fits excellently with the characters we see on the screen. The story does contain torture, but the torture is not horrific and it is viewed by the main characters as unacceptable. Despite the definite slash flavor, The Claiming does not contain explicit sex, instead leaving it to the reader's imagination.

The Claiming is an excellent read. [1]

My first slash was Trekslash. I don't even remember which *show*, let alone which pairing or which story...I want to say "The Claiming" by Kathryn Rammage, but I suspect that was the first *good* slash I read, rather than the first *ever* [2]

Dark but excellently done[3]
