History
After expressing their desire to make a podcast to talk about fandom related topics and tweeting about the possibility a couple of times, Jenos got a microphone, selected a name via a poll on Twitter and announced Khy as a co-host in mid-February. The first episode was posted on February 26, 2021, under the name "Monsters & Mimosas" and the podcast was renamed that same day to "The Citrus Scale" (inspired by the Lemon rating) due to possible copyright infringement and to respect the creators of an already existing podcast by the same name.[2]
On that episode Jenos and Khy talked more in depth about the origin of the podcast, and their intentions with it. In the start they were planning to center it around antis but Jenos decided that they didn't want to talk so much about negative topics so instead they chose to spotlight fanfiction, the experience of being an adult in fanfiction spaces and make it a safe space for BIPOC and LBGTQ+ people.
Format
Each episode focuses on a topic related to fanfiction, among other things the hosts discuss tropes and their different iterations, trends and misconceptions, and give their opinions on them. However, they have also done special episodes (titled "Raw" episodes) in response to events that had occurred in fandom at that time, and have given their perspective about broader topics related to fandom spaces like pro-shipper vs. anti-shipper discourse, racism and anti-blackness, and harassment in fandom spaces.
They've made a general disclaimer for all episodes that theirs is an NSFW podcast that discusses heavier themes, intended for adults only but they also provide specific disclaimers and warnings in each episode both on the show notes and the podcast itself. Example:
The Citrus Scale is an ADULTS ONLY podcast, featuring explicit content, strong language and suggestive themes not suitable for minors or anyone below the age of 18. Earphones are recommended. The Hosts are also NOT licensed medical or legal professionals. The podcast has brief mentions non con/dub con and violence.
