Reactions and Reviews
I find it so irritating to read a story that assumes you have already read the one it follows. And, possibly just to be perverse, I also find it incredibly annoying when an author feels the need to recap exactly what happened in a prequel when I have already read it. When I read BlueVelvetSpock‘s story I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm, I had no idea it was a sequel, having shamefully neglected to read the author‘s notes at the start. It didn‘t matter in the slightest, since the story stood alone. Like a good sequel should, it merely let the reader assume that, yes, these characters did have a life before the events in the story occurred... and it was probably quite interesting. But I did get to the end with a little "I wonder" in the back of my mind. I liked the story enough to look up the writer‘s other works and, in the process, finally noticed the previously ignored author‘s notes. There was another one - my " wonder" could be answered. Yay! However, in some ways A Christmas Wish could be seen as contradicting its sequel, particularly in its take on Vulcan sexuality. One story suggests a sexual awakening hinged around Pon Farr, while the other refers to a more typically Human teenage interest. The two aren‘t necessarily mutually exclusive but might well jar with some readers, as might the differing ways Spock‘s feelings towards Kirk - and the level of his understanding of them - are portrayed. Once I‘d read both this and the sequel, I wasn‘t sure I‘d have put the two together in quite the way they have been. To me, the scene at the end of the second story reflects the tone of this one in more ways than it does that of the story it is actually a part of My slight sense of dissatisfaction with that scene increased after having read this prequel and gaining more understanding of why, for me at least, it didn‘t quite "fit". That said, there was a lot to like about both A Christmas Wish and the story that follows it. BlueVelvetSpock has a nice writing style and there is a warmth and insight there that makes this work very readable. I liked both stories, I just maybe would have liked them that little bit more if they didn‘t go together. [1]
