Reactions and Reviews
"I‘ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" is on the face of it a very straightforward tale. It begins with Kirk and Spock sitting in the rec room playing chess. Uhura and several other crew members are also present, at a meeting of the ship‘s knitting club. Kirk explains a little about the craft to his curious Vulcan friend and tells him about a sweater his mom made for him when he left home for StarFleet Academy, a sweater that meant a great deal to him but that he has since lost. The conversation gives Spock an idea and he later asks Uhura to give him private knitting lessons. No prizes for guessing who he plans to knit for - but the beauty of this story isn‘t in the plot, it‘s in the way it‘s told. The narrative is woven around the events of several TOS episodes, the author putting elements of Operation Annihilate, Amok Time, Mirror, Mirror, A Piece of the Action and Journey to Babel to good use. Spock is portrayed with an endearing innocence, something that remains with him even through the gradual sexual awakening he experiences within the story. For him sexuality is made up of a vague fantasy life before Pon Farr; the object of his imaginings only given a name when he reaches sexual maturity. Kirk, meanwhile, knows exactly how he feels about Spock but is willing to bide his time and be patient until the Vulcan is ready.[1]
