The Castle and the River is a Blake's 7 story by Jean Stevenson.
It was printed in the zine 5th Season #5 where it had two black and white illos by Suzan Lovett.
The inspiration for the story was this Suzan Lovett illo, which was the back cover of the print zine.
Reactions and Reviews
I usually loathe the idea of putting the B7 characters in historical stories but this one was wonderful. The cover illo is gorgeous but there is also a smashing illo of Blake and Avon on the back cover [of the zine] that I like even better. :) [1]
This is the Arthurian one. Apparently there are plenty of Arthurian B7 fics, but I haven't found them :( Sad times. Since I am Arthurian-deprived, I'm pleased this exists in a zine I own, even if it is Avon/Cally, rather than Blake/Avon. I guess perhaps I forgive it a bit for not being my actual ship because Blake (who is here know as 'the Roje'... which I quite like) is married to Queen Dayna. Which is, er, my not that secret fake ship where I don't really want them to be together. But that I still want. A bit. The language is sort of fake epic - which is not as annoying as you might think. The fic is not so long that it gets old, anyway. And the actual plot is quite fun (Servalan's behind a plot to poison Blake by manipulating Avon & others, etc - also, Avon is a wizard) and Jenna is captain of Blake's guard (yes please). The references to the specific pictures are terribly shoehorned in, but I think that's forgiveable.[2]
