Reactions and Reviews

1991

I am ambivalent about several parts of this story, especially the part where Spock 'messes' with Kirk's mind. I don't really think it was necessary for Kirk's recovery. A statement of Spock's love would have sufficed. [1]

I enjoyed this long, slow paced, found love. The addition of Carol Marcus and son was an interesting twist and Kirk's discovery about David seemed plausible. I liked the invention of the small room where K & S played chess, a room just for the two of them where even Spock could relax.

Their tentative courtship was just right with each feeling an attraction but unable or unwilling to make that first move. I also enjoyed the almost idyllic vacation, spoiled by Kirk's nearly fatal accident.

This story had a little bit of everything, along with some nice touches throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed it.[2]

1992

I have one major problem with this story. The part in which Spock and Carol Marcus put this BIG guilt trip on Kirk for not sticking around and taking care of his son. A son he didn't even know about. I think that the character of Carol Marcus is a selfish woman who cares nothing for what James Kirk or even her own son would want. Having been raised without any knowledge of my own natural father I think that David Marcus would NOT have been harmed by having Kirk as a father. It is better to know a little about your parents than to be lied to all your life. Carol Marcus was living a lie... and her child would later die because of this lie. Even if indirectly.

James Kirk is the boy's father and does have some rights to see his son... write him letters, send him photos. Teach him about life in HIS own way. Carol Marcus showed me that it wasn't Kirk who needed to show a little maturity in this story, but she who did. She ran away from the problem. She refused to let Kirk — once he confirmed that David was his soon -- make arrangements to see his son... spend time with his son. Anything so that he would benefit from knowing him.

Kirk wasn't selfish. He didn't go after Carol. I think I would have. But I guess he thought that one happy parent was better than two who are always fighting.[3]
