Reactions and Reviews
7.5 pages, (including the poem of the title) It's hard to describe this briefly. But the main part of the story concerns the first 100 days Kirk and Spock spent at the beginning of the five year mission.[1]
The word picture at the beginning of Lani’s story should be on canvas. Kirk and Spock sitting side by side, shoulders touching, against a backdrop of the Vulcan high plains at midnight would find a place on my wall. The beautiful recollections they share are nicely representative of the way their love affair began. I enjoyed the discussions overheard through their memories and the way each saw the other in the beginning. I’m amazed at how well Rudyard Kipling’s “The Thousandth Man” fits Kirk and Spock. Nice touch! [2]
The title is taken from Kipling’s poem, which is such a perfect expression of Kirk and Spock’s relationship. I really enjoyed this look back at the early days of Kirk and Spock’s friendship, when Kirk first assumed command of the Enterprise. Kirk‘s discussion with Spock about his first 100 days on the job lays the foundation for their relationship. [3]
