Thataway is a K/S story by Kathy Resch.

It was published in the print zine Nome #4 (1981) and online in Side by Side #17 (2005) as well as being posted to ASCEM in 2007.

From the author in 2007:

I wrote this story in 1980, shortly after the release of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". I was just beginning to consider writing K/S, but found I wasn't quite ready to go that 'final step', so this story is still pre K/S. "Thataway" was originally published in the fanzine "Nome" #4, published January, 1981. My thanks to "V" and "B", the original editors.[1]

and in a response to a reader in 2017:

Thanks so much for commenting; I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-) Thanks in particular for commenting on the power of the unspoken word. I wrote this story wanting show how those undercurrents and subtleties of wordless gesture and expression can count as much or more as what is actually said.[2]

Reactions and Reviews

2010

Lovely story, a believable discussion with Spock and introspective musings on Kirk's part in the aftermath of TMP. Jim's eyes have finally opened fully and he knows what he wants and needs, and he is willing to take the step to keep them both :-D. This is one of those feel-good stories I like to re-read on a regular basis. Nice mention of Spock's special smile "for Kirk alone". I love that smile :).[3]

2012

This was an incredible piece. I love the psychology of it, the way it delved into character motivations. Such an intensely vivid portrayal of Kirk, and so visceral.

The story felt intimate, and entirely relatable, effortlessly capturing what it feels like to be at a crossroad in life.

I especially enjoyed the simple elegance in which you addressed Kirk and Spock's relationship, understated in a way that they always have been, yet conveying so much with body language, with their eyes, in that way where they say little, but what they say means everything. There was a reverence there that was brilliant to read and experience.

I really enjoyed this, thank you![4]

2021

3/5: I don't really care much for character study fics, so I'm not that good at rating and reviewing them. Other than a few typos this was very well written, and read almost like an excerpt from a Star Trek novel. [5]
