Ship Name

Tendershipping, the most popular name for the ship, is a bit controversal in the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom, with many finding the name nonsensical, and thinking it doesn't fit the pairing in question. It's original definition on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Master Shipping List was that it is "named so because Bakura would have to be extremely tender with Ryou for their relationship to work", but thanks to some discussions by other Tumblr users on what it was originally supposed to mean [1] [2], a second definition was added to their page: "tender’ is a form of payment and Bakura refers to Ryou as “landlord” and tenants do have to pay their landlord in order to reside where they are at". [3]

Another name for the pairing is Stockholmshipping, coming from the trust that Ryou Bakura still shows to Yami even after all he has done to him, but it is not used a lot; allegedly, it was originally named Ringshipping, to contrast with Puzzleshipping, but that name started being used for the pairing of Mahad/Yami Bakura. [4] When it pairs Ryou with Thief King Bakura, it is called Gemshipping.
