AU Epic-In-Progress. A teenage Spock convinces his father to move to Earth for Amanda's happiness. The story chronicles his meeting with Jim Kirk, the part-Betazoid adopted son of Captain Chris Pike, their deepening friendship, and the romantic attachment that forms between them. And this boring summary doesn't make this story justice so go read it for yourself. Original and fabulous characterization all around, with all the characters being totally kick-ass in the best possible way. [2]
This is a series of self-contained stories, a Trek AU that's more or less a Reboot AU -- Jim Kirk is 1/4 Betazoid, his father was half and half, he and Spock meet as kids and just fall for each other right away. Jim's mother is a pretty horrible person in this universe; she refused to believe her sons that her husband was beating them and generally a monster, even stood up for Frank in court after he nearly beat Jim to death at the age of eleven. So in this universe he's the adopted son of Chris Pike, by formal court order severing Winona's privileges and she is under a restraining order too, to stay the hell away from Jim. Frank is in prison for years to come. There will eventually be ten stories; right now there are seven published with the eighth due in January 2011 it says. All of the stories so far are well written, with supporting characters that are properly fleshed out and a lot of intriguing stuff about the uneasy mixture between the Betazoid people and the Vulcans -- both sides offend the hell out of one another as often as not but there is genuine good will and right does prevail in the end. Mostly just a very very enjoyable and diverting read, something I really appreciated. During the course of the series the boys meet, come to know and care for one another and eventually they bond in the Vulcan fashion; they will bond in the Betazoid fashion when they are fully grown and get married. In this universe Nero hasn't happened yet except for the original attack on the Kelvin, so Vulcan still exists, but at about the age of fourteen or so, Spock and his parents relocate to Earth because Spock refuses the bond with T'Pring and decides he can't stand to hear his mother called a whore any more. And once they get settled on Earth Amanda just blossoms. She has a big part in these stories, both her and Sarek really reach out and welcome Jim into the family and support Spock in his choice of a mate, and I'm just a big old softy for Amanda -- who is referred to as Dr. Grayson by everyone else which is cool. She's got a Ed degree so it's proper. The author fleshes out the teensy bit we know about Betazed and the Betazoid people, and provides much entertainment as both Vulcans and Betazoids kinda look at one another and go, "Dude, WTF?" The individual stories are anywhere from around 7,000 words to over 20,000, and they're well presented in a nice easy to read format. It's a great series of stories and I really recommend it to anyone who likes a well-spun AU.[3]
Tangled Destinies by Keira Marcos is quickly becoming my favorite kidfic ever. Teen Spock and Jim are so adorable together.[4]
I don’t read much in this fandom, but after reading Tangled Destines I’m reconsidering. Keira has a way of bringing the characters to life and giving them new dimension that is just riveting. And it’s my head-canon for Kirk. Plus her Amanda is everything I want a female character to be; totally bad ass, but still authentically female. You don’t need to know Star Trek to follow this story, so don’t let an unfamiliar fandom get in your way of the hours of fun you’ll have with this fic.[5]
