There are a few pages that link to Western AU. Should this also go here? --Doro 12:59, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- I think it could become a subsection, with a redirect going there directly, at least until it gets big enough and somebody actually writes about the popularity and development of Western AUs as genre or whatever might fit for that.--RatCreature 13:08, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Racism in fanfic
I think this part should move to the race and fandom page:
- for example Sheafrotherdon criticized the SGA Santa story Bound to Heart, Bound to Home[2](although this is set a bit before the classical Western time period and further east, the principle applies to many Western AUs): "In Bound to Heart, the actual Native people of the region are replaced by Athosians, people who (within SGA canon) live in another galaxy. I raised the issue of the erasure of Sac and Fox and Ho Chunk people from the story with the author."[3]
There is a part about canon, media fandom, sf fandom, but nothing about fanfic so it would fill a gap there and I don't think we need to be more specific here than saying that there can be racist pitfalls (which already links to the race and fandom page). --Doro 16:23, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hm, I think having specific examples for racism on both the genre pages and the racism page would be good instead of just the racism page. The other seems a bit like cordoning off all criticism in a special corner. I could see moving this example because technically this historical fiction is not set in the time period or location of what's typically understood as Western, even though it has Indians. It was just the most recent example/post I could find in which the problem of casting non-Indian characters in the role of Native American peoples and characters in AU fanfic was addressed, an that happens really often. I mean, the Western AUs linked do that, like Night Eagle.--RatCreature 17:18, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- ETA: And I think on the race and fandom page fanfic examples probably should include the ones that started major discussions, like the that SGA with Ronon and Teyla as pets of John and Rodney, or that the discussion about the jobs the team was cast in, like that one by Toft and some others, I think some of those already have paragraphs mentioning this on their respective pages.--RatCreature 17:23, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- ETA2: eg on the AMTDI page one of my posts that was about racist tropes in SGA fic is linked already, that would fit on the racism page as well. Though I guess it would be nice if the examples didn't just talk about SGA fanfic. I mean, not that there isn't plenty of racism, but it's no different from other fandoms.--RatCreature 17:28, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
split page
I think this page covers multiple concepts and should be split somehow. Based on the conversation here, I'd like to make the split between the fanwork genres and the canon genre. List of Wild West Fandoms or Wild West Fandoms?--æþel 23:51, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
