Talk:Sorting AU

This is such a popular trope I can't believe we didn't have an article till now! Can anyone help with the history (eg the first sorting AU, who came up with the name "sorting AU"). Also is there anything remotely similar in other fandoms? I can imagine in Tolkien, a what if in which Gimli was born an elf or Legolas a dwarf would be a bit like Slytherin!Harry, but I don't recall that type of story being written back in the day. Sadly can't help with filling it out more with the history, I know there are a lot and it's been around for as long as I can remember (joined the fandom in 2001 so I think about that time or a little after, the films probably popularized it), but I never really read them that much. Although I might be able to track down some Hermione ones. And as for other fandoms, I think Role Reversal AU is pretty close (although that term I've heard from other fandoms so it's really not just the Merlin fandom that uses it). I was just barely in the LOTR fandom so I'm sure about that one. However, I think the X-Men fandom is probably the closest - some often make X-Men team members the Brotherhood or whatnot and vice versa (but at the same time, that's also very canon - it happens all the time in the comics). --Harpie (talk) 08:16, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
