Okay, question. How are we going to deal with the whole Japanese 'oh' (phonetically) sound? I've seen 'oh', 'ō', and 'ou' before, but should we settle on one for Fanlore? Should I use the same one for everything Japanese, or use the 'commonly accepted' spellings for names and 'ou' for general terms?Kiratael 12:03, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

The page for doujinshi originally used a macron over the o, but IMO that's more trouble than necessary (I don't know how to make a macron, and I don't think most people do, either), so I brought that up in the talk section there and the page was changed to doujinshi. I think for terms ou is probably best, and for names, if there is a common usage with h or just plain o, then the more common (or official if that's the case) version should be used. Like in Prince of Tennis fandom, I think I've commonly seen Ryoma and Kaidoh (I'm not in the fandom, but it was all over my flist for a while), so I would go with those spellings. Agreed. 'Ou' is the most common when people are romanizing new words that don't have standard romanizations already. 'Oh' is common in names that end in that long vowel, especially if they've been romanized for an audience that's not familiar with Japanese. Just plain 'o' is misleading (but common enough in official translations and old loan words), and macrons aren't supported well by computers, so they make text searching a royal pain.
