Talk:Romantic Myth, Transcendence, and Star Trek Zines
Just some comments from a female who didn't understand slash
I have enjoyed reading the various articles here about K/S. It has always been a phenomenon that I do not understand. After perusing especially these academic articles, I may understand a bit better.
When I was an adult, some friends lent me some copies of "Nome" zines because I was curious about "slash". They wanted to let me see some of the best. Well, I read them, and looked at the drawings, and thought, "this is so strange. All these beautifully-written stories about people with Kirk and Spock's names, and jobs, and appearances, being on the starship... Yet something is so strangely off about their relationships, and their characters."
I wasn't particularly won over to ST slash between Kirk and Spock, nor did I read it in other fandoms. I did keep trying to understand it. I later went to a Mountain Media con panel on Slash to try to get answers about why the characters are turned gay. I heard "they're not gay, they're in love," and "straight men have sex with each other all the time, they're not gay just because of that." Um, okay...?
I have decided that maybe I am just not a romantically inclined person. And that is okay. (Glad to note that "strong female characters" in 2020 are in much better supply than in ST:TOS's time! Also straight men who are sensitive friends are appearing more often.) Pcdfanwriter (talk) 00:25, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
