Talk:Pon Farr
Could someone address whether or not Vulcan women experience Pon Farr or whether canon is clear on this matter? Until I read this article, I'd always assumed only the men went through it--I thought the original idea was to have a sort of role reversal, where Vulcan men went through a regular cycle of crabbiness. I haven't seen Enterprise, but until that point, I don't think I've ever come across a mention of a female Vulcan going through it. (I just rewatched bits of Amok Time; Spock doesn't make any gender qualifications about Pon Farr, but then he says, "And we are driven by forces we cannot control to return home and take a wife.")--Aethel 04:30, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- T'Pol experienced Pon Farr in Enterprise. Maybe for canon info the ST wiki could be linked since we're not supposed to put much canon info into this wiki? http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Pon_farr --Ratcreature 09:45, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thinking about this some more: I might have got the gendered idea from Star Trek III, although I don't remember if Saavik actually specified that only *males* went through pon farr every 7 years. If the later canon (e.g. Enterprise and Voyager) about pon farr jossed a lot of fanfic, it would be worth mentioning, but, uh, I haven't read any Star Trek fanfic, so I don't know....--Aethel 16:31, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Another question is whether Romulans go through pon farr or something similar. I know I've seen that idea in at least a couple pieces of fan fiction. -- Kdcat 18:19, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Is this appropriate to have in the article? "(Note: Crap changes like this are why many of us hated the later Trek shows.)" Perhaps something along the lines of "Many TOS fans prefer to ignore aspects of canon introduced by the later Trek shows" would be less offensive to fans of TNG/DS9/Voy/Ent. --Anenko 19:57, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think it's inappropriate per se, after all there is the PPOV policy, but it should be properly cited because who is "us"? If it stays, it should be something like fangirls X, representing POV Y, says: "Crap like that..." Other Star Trek fans prefer..., etc. --Doro 20:11, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, agreed. As a fan of some of the later Trek series, I found it something of an unpleasant shock to have shows I enjoyed called "crap" as part of the article. If it's a quote by a particular fan, I still wouldn't agree, but I'd be less inclined to think that Fanlore was looking down on the canon (and fans of said canon). --Anenko 20:24, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
- Stumbling over this two years later, I agree and have deleted it. Observations of fannish reaction are fair, and I wouldn't mind if someone edited and re-added it, but I really don't like that phrasing.--Greenygal 18:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
- Although the line "Crap changes like this..." is exactly what made me sign up for Fanlore in the first place (because it made me realize that opinion was allowed), I agree that calling it a "crap" change lowers the tone and makes the wiki less classy. I put in "not all fans appreciated this" and I'll look for references. --KTJ 18:15, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
