I noted that someone removed all of the banners and the descriptions. I could not find any discussion or explanation. Absent discussions, the banners will most likely need to be restored.--MeeDee (talk) 01:25, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- I just saw the comment about the creator not wanting the images to appear here. In these cases she should contact the Fanlore Wiki Committee to discuss her concerns. Until then I suggest the pages be restored so that they will be available for review and discussion.--MeeDee (talk) 01:29, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- First off, as someone with behind-the-scenes knowledge, I should say here that back in 2010 when the first expansion of Fanlore pages on Mary Renault fandom was taking place, there was considerable discussion on my_cnnr's LJ journal. It started in July 2010, and ran through into September. She, my sister and I, and queen_ypolita were involved; and she knew all about it. In particular, she was told on 5 September 2010 that I had added a section on MRF banners to the main article on the community. Specifically, she was told that copies of some of the banners were added to illustrate it. On 9th Sept, I told her that I'd started a new page for the banners. I offered to take them down if she wanted: she then said that she was simply taken aback, and that I need not do so. She said that she was flattered and embarrassed and -- I can't quote without breaking f-lock. However, she did say that she knew that once things were out on the internet they were fair game. (If that helps, given that she wrote it in a f-locked journal.) She has definitely known about the banners being on Fanlore since September 2010. --Greer Watson (talk) 10:50, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the background. From Fanlore's perspective, images need to meet fair use. (Fanlore's image policy here: Fanlore:Image_Policy). In the absence of the artist explaining their concerns or contacting the Wiki Committee, here are my general thoughts. Note these are my thoughts only and additional thoughts are welcomed. Fair use is determined on a case by case basis. This often means there needs to be some contextualization and background on the art and the events they are meant to depict. Banners, which are meant to advertise an event and often are intended to be shared by other fans, may not require in depth commentary, but to be on the safe side, you might want to offer additional context about the image - its design and how it matches the challenge (along with a description of the challenge) or how the banner mirrors a specific classical style or mirrors the original source. Comments about the artist's stylistic choices along with comments and feedback from community members in response to the banners would be welcomed. I see that such text does accompany some of the images so I am not certain whether additional commentary is needed - these are just general suggestions. --MeeDee (talk) 15:41, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
