Talk:Indian Lover
I'm uncomfortable with the way the commentary about the dated vocabulary on this page overwhelms the article. I hope someone can add more content to balance it out. --Mrs. Potato Head 13:10, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
- You could add a {{PPOV}} notice to the page. --Doro 13:56, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
I asked the Wiki Committee for advice on the general issue of quoting offensive content on Fanlore immediately after I threw up the two quick explanatory notes. I was hoping someone with academic or archiving experience might have suggestions on common practice in handling something like this. While that might yet bear fruit, I wanted to try to make this page better now. I do want to say that I think it is absolutely vital that pages like this be on Fanlore and that the quote is the appropriate quote to use. I also think that pages that contain this sort of language need context provided for the usage of that language.
I attempted, and failed, to find a copy of this story online, so I'm not able to read it. I can't find any discussion of it either, and my recollection of the canon is very hazy, so I don't know how the issue was depicted on the show. If someone else does, that could go on the Young Riders page or here, or both.
I did cite the source of the quotation, which I believe should always be done for any quotation, and I made mention of Agent With Style's practice of not letting on if the blurbs on her website are author's summaries or her description, which I found a mention of on a talk page about another zine altogether. I think this should be spelled out on the page for Agent With Style. I'm curious if that has ever been controversial, or if that was/is common practice in zine fandom.--facetofcathy 18:08, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't seen the show, but this review of episode 1.09 mentions that one of the bad guys called someone (I have no idea who these people are) Indian lover when they tried to rescue someone. A quick google check linked me to at least two stories that use the expression Indian lover and one of them is this one which includes the warning "This story may be disturbing to some readers, it touches on the ugly subjects of racial prejudice, gang violence and suicide." --Doro 18:30, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- I did not find either searching for the story title and the fandom name together, thanks for having another go. I'll put in a link to the episode review, as it's the only one I can find that quotes that line. I think mentioning the other story would really overwhelm the page more than it is, but that could go on the fandom page.--facetofcathy 01:16, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
"Half Breed," referring to Spock, is the name of at least one Star Trek: TOS story. It appears in the zine Tholian Web. --Mrs. Potato Head 17:02, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Template Removal
Can we remove the PPOV template? Is there enough on the page now to address the title of this zine? --Mrs. Potato Head 23:44, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
