Talk:Friendfiction

"Friendfiction is a term used by original slash writers to describe a Shared Universe."

Since I was the source originally quoted at this wiki for this term, I'd like to point out that the term isn't in general use in the original fiction community. As far as I can tell (I just did a Google search), "friendfiction" has been used at exactly one forum: orig_slavefic (which is an original fiction forum, incidentally, not an original slash forum). I haven't seen the term used anywhere else, in that sense. See my 2008 comment at Talk:Original_Slash.

So saying that friendfiction is a term "used by original slash writers" is really misleading. The vast majority of original slash writers have never heard of the term.

Orig_slavefic has a very specific meaning for friendshipfiction; see this post (skip down to the term): "The sole exception to the 'original fiction only' rule is for what might be called 'community friendfiction.' We do allow fanfiction (fiction based in someone else's original world or utilizing someone else's original characters) if and only if: The original fiction being fanficced was posted to orig_slavefic, by the original author; the original author gave explicit consent to the fanficcing of his or her work . . ."

Therefore, friendfiction doesn't necessarily mean shared universe, because there may be only one author who decides to write that piece of fan fiction. So I'd say that the terms friendfiction and shared universe were overlapping, rather than identical.
