Can I just go ahead and start redirecting these single author named novels rather than waiting for a gardener? Like I just did to this one? Can anyone see any problems with this decision? Mrs. Potato Head 19:28, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

I've done that a couple times. The only problem with it is that the edit history gets lost--or, rather, it's now on the redirect page, where people might not think to look.--æthel 19:56, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to just go in and take care of them all, as they're making some problems as they stand, but I have a feeling this wouldn't be a smart move. When the gardeners "fix" these single-author novels, what are they doing exactly? A fancier redirect? Deleting the old one? (which messes up other links? I think someone was complaining about that the other day) And what exactly does happen to all the wikilinks that have the old way on them after a gardener tweaks an single author page to make it right? That was probably me complaining :) The gardeners are simply renaming/moving the single-author pages, as far as I know; I was under the impression that when gardeners rename a page, all the information (content, edit history) gets moved over to the new page, and the original name is automatically (?) recreated as a new page that's a redirect. So I was a bit confused by all the deleted pages that to my thinking should have been redirects. But, uh, someone who's actually a gardener should jump in and correct me.--æthel 20:16, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, this is correct - gardeners actually rename the page, which brings the full edit history and Talk page (and associated history) to the new name, and automatically creates a redirect from the old page name. I think the problem is that on many of the pages flagged for gardener attention, there was a note saying something like "please rename to New Page Name and delete this page as it is unnecessary". The gardener who did the cleanup must have assumed that that's what was being requested for every rename, and deleted the old pages in response. Generally that shouldn't happen; deletion requests are rarely needed, as it's simpler to just have a redirect in case someone else types the older name, or there's already links to it. FWIW, there are still a lot of those single-author zine pages that haven't been moved because the wiki admins haven't had a chance to get to them, but it really is better to just hang on and wait for the official rename, so the edit history and Talk pages don't get lost. --Arduinna 07:13, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
