Talk:Drabble
I believe the terminology comes from pros, actually, but I can't chase down the reference ATM --Betty 05:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Drabble comes from the Birmingham Science Fiction Society. It's pretty well-documented actually, I'll look up a cite later. --zvi 05:06, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Should drabblethon be a separate entry?--zvi 05:06, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
The first drabble community I remember was the Smallville one, wednesday100, run by LaT. And then it took off after that. --Nestra 16:39, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I will totally add that. --Sophinisba 16:52, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
The name dribble is probably of recent vintage, but 55 word fic predates 2005. I know it was happening in Farscape as early as 2000, and maybe earlier, but that was the only date I could confirm with the wayback machine. --zvi 18:31, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- The dribble fad in hobbit fandom was a specific form that starts with ten words in the first line, nine in the second and so on down to one, or variations that go backward or double it up and so on. (I'm fond of them because they have a really nice look to them on the page.) Have you come across that in other fandoms? --Sophinisba 18:44, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- No, but that's not at all what's described on the page. --zvi 18:47, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- No, you're very right. I wasn't aware of the older 55 word stories so I'm grateful for the info. Hope the last edit is somewhat better. --Sophinisba 19:09, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
I ran across the variation of "169 word" stories in an Star Trek (Deep Space Nine? TOS?) e-zine recently and wonder if that was common for that fandom. Mrs. Potato Head 22:36, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've seen several in DS9. I think there was a challenge? Googling says this on a Garak/Bashir page " a challenge issued on the GBX mailing list"[1], I've also this Trek Femme FuhQ fest mentions them[2], in this LJ post by Halrloprillalar from 2003 about drabbles a DS9 fan (at least looking like that from the Dukat icon) says " My fandom doesn't do a lot of drabbles... we tend to do 169-word stories instead."[3]. I have no idea why 169 though.--Ratcreature 22:36, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
