Talk:Dancing Till Dawn
I tried to find out the author to fill in more here and found that this was publised by Orion Press in 1994, it's listed on their zine list [1] there with the full name of the author. I looked at which stories this author had published and googled to see whether she used the name online because of that pre-1995 name policy (I'm not sure whether it counts if the zine publisher uses the name online, because I'm not sure whether that is "choice"), anyway most of her stories, including this novella seem to have been archived online by here at the WWOMB but not under that fanzine name, but under an online pseud. So for naming the author of this novella should I go with the shortened form from the Orion zine i.e. Cyndi B. or should I take the online pseud? The name policy, it confuses me. :/ PS in any case, once a name to use is decided upon it should be moved, as this is a single author novella.--Ratcreature 21:38, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- ...phew. My first thought here was that we cannot take reponsibility for the practices of other sites -- but on the other hand, by linking, we are making it significantly easier to identify by cross-comparison, even if within this site we are trying to contain that risk. Tricky. That said, wouldn't using the online pseud instead of the abbreviated name help reducing that risk? In that case, I'd recommend using the former. --lian 13:50, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, right now if you know the RL name you find easily the fanactivity, naturally as Orion Press lists her. Then if you are looking to actually find a copy of the story (which I tried to make the entry better) you have to work a little bit as the common places (i.e. the Orion Online archive and that archive that host Orion zine TNG stuff) don't actually have a copy. So it took some googling to find her fanpseud at WWOMB but not that much for someone with practice to google for fanfic at least. I suspect if you know the current fanpseud and that archive it's also possible to find the RL name, but you'd have to google combinations of the right story title and possibly without the fanpseud to get a hit on zine list with her RL name (iirc she doesn't mention the Orion Press zine publication at the WWOMB, but I'd have to check again to be sure, so you wouldn't automatically know to go to that zine page). However if we archived this here under the current fanpseud anyone just needs to look her up here, and then is pointed to the Orion Press page with her full name.--Ratcreature 14:01, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- There's a "contact author" link at WWOMB; can someone try to contact this author and ask her preference? That might be the simplest way of resolving this, if she's reachable.--Penknife 14:07, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- Uh, could someone else do that? I have no idea where or what the WWOMB is. --lian 15:40, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- Heh, I had no idea that it doesn't have a wiki page yet. It's a large multifandom archive maintained by Peja, short for Wonderful World Of Make Believe: http://squidge.org/peja/cgi-bin/index.php, that said, the author has only uploaded all her stories there in a short period in 2004, and hasn't been active there since, also I find asking every author impractical as a general guideline to handle old zine with new online pseuds when you can't find an explicit author statement, but found through google. I mean, in that case I'd just not bother to google whether there are online version of zines available when editing a zine entry, put the shortened name here, and readers have fend for themeselves. --Ratcreature 15:49, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
